Above are three recent Anthologies my short stories appear in
I am currently working on a collection of short stories, many of which have been published or recognised in short story competitions such as Mslexia, The Brighton Prize, Frome Short Story Prize, Words with Jam, Winchester Writers Festival and Exeter Writers. I am also close to finishing a novel which has been a long time in the making (as novels are!).
I have been published extensively in my past writing life where I was an arts critic with the West Australian newspaper in Perth and wrote for many international journals/magazines primarily on live theatre. I wrote about productions across a wide range of genres from the Royal Shakespeare Company to Michael Jackson. This writing was a happy by product of my “first career” as a theatre lighting designer and technical manager.
I finished up this strand of my career with a fabulous stint at Glyndebourne Opera House when I realised that after thirteen years of working nights in theatre it would be great to be home for dinner occasionally!
It’s always encouraging to hear that your writing has been enjoyed and this comment comes from one of my favourite novelists Isabel Wolff who judged Words With Jam short story competition in 2016. My entry, In a Heartbeat, was then shortlisted for The Brighton Prize in 2017 and published in their anthology.
“Judging the Words With Jam competition has been an enormous pleasure… two stories were set in hotels – the hilarious, deadpan In a Heartbeat about a strings-free liaison between two middle-aged people…”
